Chinese New Year 2017 came earlier for children and teenagers at Breakthru.
Chinese New Year songs were in the air as the children donned lion heads and competed in games set up by the teachers of Breakthru Enrichment on 25 January. There was a lot of cheer and laughter as teachers and students cheered and egged their team mates on. The lion heads were made out of cardboard boxes and multi-colour papers. The older teenagers looked very much in control of the day’s sound system.
Preparations for the day had started in the first week of January itself. Teachers and students decorated their “houses” and made the lion heads. The students also went on a mini treasure hunt at a supermarket nearby.

Led by the teachers, four groups of children were given pictures of snacks that they have to identify and pick out for their Chinese New Year Open House party. Everyone had a chance to look for the items. On the way back, the children stopped by the mall’s CNY pavillion, taking photos of each other.

After the games, everyone went visiting the Open Houses. Just like a typical open house, there were lots of food and oranges, and of course, lots of angpows to make everyone happy.
It is Breakthru’s practice to hold a pre-CNY celebration every year. Besides just having fun, it is also a teaching moment for teachers as the occasion is used to build on abilities like sharing, respect, kindness, courtesy and team spirit.
